Aswan, Egypt's sunniest southern city and ancient frontier town located about 81 miles south of Luxor, has a distinctively African atmosphere. It is one of the most beautiful places in the country with the town located on the East Bank and the desert coming right up to the Nile on the West Bank
Small enough to walk around and graced with the most stunning setting on the Nile, the river here is peppered with islands, the pace of life is slow and relaxing. Days can be spent watching sailboats float dreamily by as spectacular sunsets appear before you. two main islands to visit are Elephantine; with ruins and a museum, while Kitchener features a botanic garden. Explore the souk, a feast for the senses, packed with spices, perfumes, baskets and scarves. Aswan has been a favourite winter resort since the beginning of the nineteenth century, and it's still a perfect place to get away from it all.
The spectacular Aswan High Dam which controls the River Nile's water level
-If it had been completed, the Unfinished Obelisk would have been one of the heaviest built by the ancient Egyptians
-Temple of Isis, Philae - a romantic island temple worshipped by visitors from afar
-The awe inspiring Lake Nasser, the largest man-made lake in the world
-Abu Simbel Temple - for many visitors is considered the most spiritual temple in Egypt
